This week we got the opportunity to hear from Doug Wiesner who is the Youth Sports Medicine Program Director at The University of Kansas Hospital. He taught us all about functional rehabilitation; the basics, rules, strategies and premises. Everything he went into was so interesting to hear about. He emphasized how much everything in the body connects and works together. The human body is amazing, Doug explained to us how just because your lower back hurt, it could mean there is something wrong with your big toe. I got to learn about how rehab has to enhance the function of the athlete, you have to test the motion not the muscles. Every muscle is synergistic! He also really stressed talking about all three planes of motion, (transverse, sagittal and frontal). I learned that stretching should be performed in all three planes, not just one. And that stretching should be as close to transformation zone as possible. It was so satisfying to learn about everything he taught us and I learned so much! It was very interactive and definitely an amazing opportunity to be able to hear Doug talk.
